July 15, 1996. MSNBC, a 24-hour all-news network, made its debut on cable TV and the Internet 21 years ago. MSNBC was launched on July 15, 1996. The first show, which was anchored by Jodi Applegate, broadcast a lineup of news, interviews, and opinions. During the day, rolling news coverage continued with The Contributors, a show that featured Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham, as well as interactive programming coordinated by Applegate, John Gibson and John Seigenthaler. Stories were generally longer and more detailed than the stories running on CNN at the time. NBC also highlighted their broadcast connections by airing stories direct from the NBC network affiliates, along with breaking news coverage from the same sources. MSNBC is owned by the NBCUniversal News Group, a unit of the NBCUniversal Television Group division of NBCUniversal, all of which are owned by Comcast. MSNBC and its website were both founded in 1996 as a partnership between Microsoft and General Electric's NBC unit, hence the network's naming. Although they shared the same name, msnbc.com and MSNBC maintained separate corporate structures and news operations, with msnbc.com headquartered on the West Coast on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington, and MSNBC in the NBC headquarters in New York. Microsoft divested its stake in the MSNBC channel in 2005, and divested its stake in msnbc.com in July 2012. The general news site was rebranded as NBCNews.com and a new msnbc.com was created as the online home of the cable news channel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSNBC

July 15, 2006. Twitter is launched, becoming one of the largest social media platforms in the world. "With Twitter, it wasn't clear what it was. They called it a social network, they called it microblogging, but it was hard to define, because it didn't replace anything. There was this path of discovery with something like that, where over time you figure out what it is. Twitter actually changed from what we thought it was in the beginning, which we described as status updates and a social utility. It is that, in part, but the insight we eventually came to was Twitter was really more of an information network than it is a social network." ~Evan Williams https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter

July 15, 1834. The Spanish Inquisition is officially disbanded after 356 years of operation. The Spanish Inquisition was est. in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, & finally, on July 15, 1834, the Spanish Inquisition was definitively abolished by a Royal Decree signed by regent Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand VII's liberal widow, during the reign of Isabella II, and with the approval of the President of the Cabinet Francisco Martínez de la Rosa. The Spanish Inquisition's last execution was the hanging of Spanish war veteran & school teacher Cayetano Ripoll in 1826 for being a "deist". Cayetano was in prison for 2 years, and some Catholic officials wanted Ripoll to be burnt alive. A "deist" is a philosophical position which posits that a god does not interfere directly with the world. Deism also rejects revelation as a source of religious knowledge with the conclusion that reason and observation of the natural world are sufficient to determine the existence of a single creator of the universe. 150,000 persons were charged with crimes by the Inquisition, & it is believed 3,000 – 5,000 people were executed.
